This phase of Youth Scholars’ development and growth requires hands on projects within the day so that learning and fun can be woven into each class. Master teachers plan class topics that stem from their own talents and passion. The difference is shown in exceptional classroom management, creative engagement, and unique problem-solving with students self-directing much of their achievements. Morning AND afternoon class choices are now available!

Week 1: June 25 – 29

Comic Book Art and Design (AM)

Come be immersed the art of comic books.  This course will explore the artistic techniques used to make comic book illustrations.  As students learn throughout the week, they will take these skills and apply them to some original creations.

STEM Discoveries (AM)

Discover the intricacies of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.  This integrated class will explore topics within these disciplines through hands-on, interactive learning.

While students are spending half of this block in the pool (75 minutes), the other half of the time is spent playing fun games out on the fields or in the gym during inclement weather. Depending on interests of children, there will be flexibility in the programming. Ex: soccer, basketball, dodgeball, volleyball, badminton, ping pong, tennis, lacrosse, wiffle ball, flag football, etc.

Kite Building and Design (PM)

Let’s Go (design, build, and then) Fly a Kite!  The study of this course is at the nexus of math, physics, and art.  Students will explore the aerodynamics of kites, and then use that knowledge, alongside their artistic imaginations, to design and produce their own flyer.  By Friday, our MFS fields will be full of beautiful kites!

Elementary Chinese (PM)

Come learn the basics of the Mandarin Chinese language.  Through exposure to language, music, food, and culture, students will spend this week immersed in Chinese.  Bring your love to learn and your love of language!

Fiber Arts with the Handwork Day Camp (AM)

Picture your child in the care of energetic and imaginative counselors exploring the world of needle-arts. At Handwork Day Camp, you’ll find campers sharing stories and laughs while working on a wide array of unique projects. Our goal is to teach useful skills such as hand-sewing, embroidery, knitting, weaving, needle-felting and much more! Campers are always free to express themselves and are enveloped in creativity and fun. Whether refining skills or learning brand new ones, our camp is sure to delight. Join the fun with Summer 2018’s fresh new curriculum and different projects every week! No previous experience necessary, but our trained staff will work on advancing skills too!

Natural Science on our Campus (AM)

Science is all around us.  In this class, students will explore the natural world on the 48 acre MFS campus.  By going out into the woods to collect specimens and bringing them back to the classroom for lab research, this promises to be a truly interactive class.

Guinea Pig Palooza (PM)

Come explore the world of Guinea Pigs, and share what you may already know!  Over the week we will learn all about these furry creatures and create obstacle courses to give them exercise and socialization.  And, of course, there will be plenty of time to hold and love our animal friends.

Spiral Art and Mathematics (PM)

Spirals are all around us.  From the Nautilus seashell to the petals of a rose, these phenomena are constantly present.  This course will examine examples of spirals, explore the basic mathematics which are part of their creation, and then extrapolate this knowledge artistically.  Using tools and techniques such as spirographs and tie-dye, students will explore spirals in many different and beautiful ways.

LEGO – WeDo Robotics (AM)

Explore your creativity while learning about architecture, robotics, engineering, and design using LEGO bricks. Each day, Junior Scholars are presented with individual and team building challenges that require you to problem solve, plan, build, test, and evaluate. You will also have time for free building your own creations! All students improve their critical thinking skills, fine motor abilities, and develop teamwork and communication skills.

National Karate Institute/Moorestown (AM)

 

Teacher: Master Kim and staff

This 5-day class will introduce the basics in the martial arts discipline.  In partnership with the National Karate Institute/ Moorestown, this class emphasizes their philosophy of humility, concentration, integrity, indomitable spirit, perseverance, respect, obedience, and self-control.  Come build your character and strength in this safe and meaningful class.

Art for Youth Scholars (PM)

This survey course will explore various artistic media.  The instruction will focus on the proper ways to use materials, as well as techniques of composition.  The class will blend time for learning these skills with ample opportunity for each student’s creations.

Just Be - Yoga and Mindfulness (PM)

 

Teacher: Paige Bloom

Dive into the journey of the yogic path through this weeklong seminar. Students will be exposed to the many positive impacts of a yoga practice as they move and challenge their bodies, minds and souls through asana, meditation, and collaborative mat chats.  Students will be provided with opportunities to deepen their sense of self, learn stress relieving strategies, and continue to develop a healthy body image all in a fun, supportive, non-competitive environment.

Week 4: July 23 – 27

Music Creation with GarageBand (AM)

Use the technology resources of MFS to make music using GarageBand.  Students will explore how different melodies and harmonies work together, as well as how different instrumentation provides different effects.  Sound editing will be a part of this course as well.

A Seussical Adventure (AM)

Teacher:  Kaitlin Kelly

Explore the world of Dr. Seuss through the world of science and art! Each day discover one of Dr. Seuss’ wondrous books by conducting science experiments, creating art projects and engaging in STEM activities that match the themes of the books. Meet characters such as Bartholomew and create the famous green Oobleck that from that fell from the sky. Discover Ten Apples Up on Top and try to build a structure that will hold as many apples as possible! Join in on the fun world of Seuss while engaging in science and art activities!

Come explore different parts of the world, through geography and culture!  Through basics of language, location, music, art, and food, we will gain new understandings of places and peoples.  At the heart of this course is the connection that people have – and can create – with each other, through shared understanding and appreciation of what makes each other unique.

Week 5: July 30 – August 3

WeDo Amusement Park: Design Thinking (FD)

Teacher: Caitlin Sweeney

Using WeDo Design Thinking, students will examine and solve challenges related to amusement parks.  From ferris wheels to roller coasters, there are many avenues (boardwalks?) to explore.  As students use Design Thinking to solve these challenges, they are engaging both in design as well as with physics and math.  This full-day course will also incorporate elements of video technology, so that the story of our amusement parks can be captured and preserved.

Icky Sticky Science (AM)

Get ready to get messy! In this course, students will explore science through hands on science experiments. Have fun making homemade play dough, icky snot, and bouncy goo! Students will enjoy getting messy while learning about the scientific process! Don’t forget a smock or old tee-shirt for this class!

Rhythm is all around us in the world.  Our hearts and bodies contain rhythm, as do our minds and our lives.  Come experience how rhythm is a part of everything we do.  Children will explore the rhythms found in nature and our surroundings.  Music will play a role in this classroom experience as well.

Week 6: August 6 – 10

Let’s Put On A Play (FD)

From story to production, and everywhere in between, students will work together to put on a play.  They will grow their acting skills, develop characters, design costumes, and build sets as part of this collaborative project.  The week will end with a performance for friends and families.

American Sign Language (AM)

This week will explore the basics of American Sign Language.  From the alphabet to basic greetings and expressions, students will explore the ways that they can communicate in this unique and valuable language.

Science Explorations (PM)

This class will open young eyes to many basic, but fascinating science happenings around us every day. Beware, kids will get their hands messy while conducting exciting experiments.

• Students may not sign up for PM classes only. Half Day participants attend AM only. (Senior Scholars is an exception.)
• Students may also enroll in sports camps including tennis, fencing, soccer, basketball, flag football, and swimming. Learn more here.
• A small portion of the day following lunch includes a Community Building activity which reflects an important element in the Moorestown Friends’ educational philosophy.
• BONUS: Pizza Friday (with popsicles) is offered during weeks 1, 3 and 6 as a camp-provided lunch.
